constable Peter Ojwang
Kenyan Mpesa fraudsters have changed their tricks and are now luring diplomats and foreigners into their traps with a view of defrauding them with cash.
For instance, police constable Peter Ojwang narrated to a Kibera court how a British diplomat lost Sh300,000 to fraudsters who checked on him through a phone call.
Ojwang told senior principal Derrick Kuto that Andrew John Starkey, a British diplomat received a call from an organized individual through mobile number 0115298905 purporting to be Safaricom customa care desk representatives.
“The individual called him and informed him that his line had been double registered and later on instructed him to give him personal information so that he blocks the other users,” said Ojwang.
Ojwang told the court that without knowing what the fraudster wanted to do, the diplomat went ahead and gave him his personal details and in the process, his Sh338,442 was withdrawn from his phone.
“He lost Sh338,442 after handing over the said details and the matter was reported to our police station,” he added.

He urged Kuto to grant him some orders so that he could use them to get more information from Safaricom as he continued with his investigations.
Kuto granted him the said orders and directed that the case proceed once the investigations were done.
